The Dental Building

The Institute of Oral Biology , founded in 1993, is located in the Dental Building at the National Yang-Ming University . Oral Biology in concerned with the nature of the oral and craniofacial tissues and with the applications of basic science to oral health and diseases. The research in Oral Biology overlaps with both basic medical sciences and clinical dental sciences.

The primary mission of the Institute of Oral Biology is to bridge the gap between the basic sciences and the clinical dental practice through excellence in research and in the education of scientists for academic and research position of leadership.

The faculties are all actively engaged in research, mostly at the basic science level, but also a number are engaged in clinical research. The faculties participate in the discovery and teaching of current concepts and molecular findings in oral cell and tissue structure, function and development, oral pathology and oral diseases.

Major Research Topics

  • DNA repair and signaling pathways in oral cancer
  • The molecular and epigenetic mechanisms of oral carcinoma
  • The molecular mechanisms of areca-associated oral carcinogenesis
  • Toxicology of areca nut
  • Stem cells – neural stem cells and cancer stem cells
  • Research in gene knock-out mice
  • Pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus
  • Pathogenesis of periodontal diseases
  • Tissue engineering in bone regeneration
  • Electrochemistry and development of Biomaterials

Available Programs

The Institute of Oral Biology offers coursework leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Oral Biology. We recruit and encourage qualified students, who seek advanced research training and careers in dental academia and research, to apply to our graduate programs. The international students are also welcomed to apply to both MS and PhD programs.
